TEHRAN (IQNA) – The provincial stage of the 40th edition of the Awqaf national Quran competition in Tehran province kicked off in a ceremony on Monday.

A number of Quranic and religious officials, including Hojat-ol-Islam Hamid Mohammadi, the secretary of the Council for Development of Quranic Culture, and Hojat-ol-Islam Gholam Reza Mohammadzadeh, the director of the province’s Awqaf Department, attended the ceremony.

Addressing the event, Hojat-ol-Islam Mohammadzadeh noted that some 180 individuals have made it to the provincial stage of the Quran contest.

He said the competition is held in such categories as Quran memorization, recitation, Adhan (call to prayers), and recitation of supplications.

The women’s section of the competition is underway on August 7-8 while men will compete on August 9-11.

Winners of different categories will make it to the national stage, which will be hosted by the northwestern city of Orumiyeh, West Azarbaijan province.

The Awqaf and Charity Affairs Organization annually organizes the Quranic event with the aim of promoting the teachings of the Holy Quran, fostering Quranic activities and identifying the country’s Quranic talents.
