A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit the border region between Iran and Iraq Sunday night, killing tens of people, mostly in Iran, injuring many more and leaving thousands homeless.

Following the tremor, Sheikh Abdul Latif Hamim, the head of Iraq’s Sunni Awqaf Department ordered that mosques in the quake hit areas provide shelter for those affected.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has also ordered all government bodies to provide assistance to people in the areas hit by the earthquake.

The epicenter of the quake, which occurred at around 09:18 pm local time, was 32 kilometers south of the Iraqi city of Halabja, in Iraqi Kurdistan, and just across the border from Iran.

But the highest casualties occurred in the town of Sarpol-e Zahab, in Iran’s Kermanshah Province.

According to the National Disaster Management Organization of Iran, 328 people were confirmed dead in Iran as of Monday noon. Some 2530 others were injured.
