A forum titled “Forsaken Virtues” was held on August 23 with the presence of grand Ayatollah Mazaheri.
Referring to the intimacy with the holy Quran as a forgotten virtue, he called the Quran a manifestation of God’s essence, a copy of the entire universe, and a source of the Divine knowledge.
“Despite its lofty status as well as all its material and spiritual benefits, the Holy Book is not fairly appreciated in our society, schools and universities, and has unfortunately been neglected to a great extent,” he went on to say.
Pointing to the Saghalain Hadith, Ayatollah Mazaheri highlighted Prophet Mohammad’s (PBUH) view of the holy Quran as the book of guidance for all mankind, as well as the Ahlul-Bayt (AS) as the best interpreters of the Holy Book.
He further elaborated on the four stages of approaching the Quran with the aim of developing better relations with it, calling “recitation” as the first stage that includes reciting and memorizing the Book and participating in different Quranic forums and gatherings.
“The Quranic verses are so fluent and fresh that mere recitation of them can bring about lots of blessings to man’s material and spiritual life even though he/she is not fully aware of their deep meanings.”
Referring to the verse 20 of surah 73 as saying: "recite from the Quran as much as is easy (for you); he knows that among you there are the sick and others traveling the road seeking the bounty of Allah; and others fighting in the way of Allah. so then, recite from it as much as is easy", he noted that the importance of reciting the Quran is to the extent that no specific time has been devoted to recitation, but it is rather welcomed at all times even in sickness, on a journey, on business, or at war.
The second stage of approaching the Holy Book, as stated by Ayatollah Mazaheri, is recitation accompanied with meditation and interpretation. “Despite the great number of Quran exegeses written throughout centuries, the deep layers of meanings hidden in the verses are still intact and untouched by interpreters,” he noted.
“However, even the existing Quran exegeses and references are not applied at their best,” he went on to say, urging all, particularly the young generation to reflect on the verses’ meanings and make better use of the Quran exegeses.
“Resorting to the holy Quran and having personal interpretations is the third stage which follows the previous one and is only possible through having a strong will and a good deal of perseverance,” he further asserted.
He later referred to following the Quran in practice as the fourth and highest stage which “has unfortunately been neglected in our society, leading to the spread of social deviations and moral corruptions that have in turn created more anxiety and distress in individuals.”
Quoting Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), he remarked: “Resort to the Quran when you are surrounded by oppression, depravity and corruption, as the Quran is the best intercessor in both this world and the Hereafter; one who follows the Book will be guided to the promised Heaven and one who abandons it will have no better stay than the Hell.”
