In view of Imam Musa Sadr, there are 5 basic principles about women in society, the first one being that the Quran is the main source for defining the status of women.
Religious scholar Hojat-ol-Islam Mehdi Mehrizi made the remark on Monday while addressing a forum titled “Status of Women in Imam Musa Sadr’s Thought and Deed”.
He said Imam Musa Sadr has talked about the Quran’s view of women in his book “Al-Mir’at Wa Al-Din” (woman and religion).
Imam Musa Sadr raised the issue of woman in several international forums some five decades ago, which shows that he attached a lot of importance to the issue, the scholar said.
“In 10 to 12 speeches, he discussed the issue and elaborated on important role models for women like Hazrat Zahra (SA) and Hazrat Zeynab (SA).”
Hojat-ol-Islam Mehrizi noted that for Imam Musa Sadr the main source for theorization was the Holy Quran, just as it was for Allameh Tabatabaee.
“Sadr in his book “Al-Mir’at Wa Al-Din” extracts the view of the Quran about women and takes it as his first principle in defining the status of women.”
The second principle was making a distinction between the customs of Muslims and what Islam says about women, he noted.
Distinguishing between the fundamental tenets of Islam and the edicts issued for a certain time, was the third principle, Hojat-ol-Islam Mehrizi stated.
He referred to continuous Ijtihad (endeavors of Muslim scholars to derive rules of Divine law from the Quran and Hadith) and the realities of the time as the two other principles of Sadr’s view about defining women’s status in society.
The religious scholar went on to say that Hijab, family, marriage, divorce, status of women in the West, status of women among Muslims, etc, are among important issues that Imam Musa Sadr has discussed in his book and speeches about women’s status in society.
The forum “Status of Women in Imam Musa Sadr’s Thought and Deed” was part of a series of forums held under the title of “Thought and Deed” by the Imam Musa Sadr Cultural-Research Institute in Tehran.
