The eighth Imam of Shia Islam, Imam Reza (AS) was martyred after being poisoned by the Abbasid Caliph Ma’mun in the year 818 AD.
Every year, ceremonies are held all over Iran and elsewhere by Shias to mark the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Reza on the 30th of Safar on the lunar Hijri calendar (this year it falls on Tuesday, December 23).
Millions of mourners converge on Imam Reza’s Holy Shrine in Mashhad to mark the tragic occasion annually.
