TEHRAN (IQNA) – A member of Iran’s Quranic delegation to Hajj is confirmed to have died in the deadly stampede in Mina, near the holy city of Makkah.

Mohsen Hajihassani Kargar, who came first in the recitation category of Malaysia’s 57th International Quran Competition back in June, was among the missing Iranian Hajj pilgrims after the tragic incident.

His brother, Mostafa Hajihassani Kargar, said in a message that he has been informed of his brother’s death.

On Friday, Saleh At’harifard, head of the Quranic delegation, had told IQNA that five members of the delegation, including Hajihassani Kargar, were still unaccounted for.

More than 1300 pilgrims, including 131 Iranians, died and many more injured in Thursday’s stampede in Mina in the worst disaster to strike the annual Hajj pilgrimage in a quarter century.

Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei on Thursday declared three days of national mourning over the heartrending incident.

It came nearly two weeks after tens of Hajj pilgrims were killed in another tragic event in Makkah.

On September 11, a massive construction crane crashed into Makkah’s Grand Mosque in stormy weather, killing at least 107 people and injuring 201 others.
