TEHRAN (IQNA) – The body of a former Iranian diplomat who had gone missing after a crush of people during Hajj has been found.

Ghazanfar Roknabadi, Iran’s former ambassador to Lebanon, went missing following the deadly crush of Hajj pilgrims in Mina, near the holy city of Makkah, in September.

While there had been various speculations on his fate, it was confirmed on Wednesday that his body has been identified among the victims of the tragedy.

Roknabadi’s brother and sister were in Saudi Arabia to help identify the body.

The body is planned to be repatriated to the country on Thursday.

Born in 1966 in the holy city of Qom, central Iran, Roknabadi served as Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon from 2010 to 2014.

The crush in Mina happened on September 24 when pilgrims were performing religious rites.

Some 70000 pilgrims, including 464 Iranians, were killed in the incident, which marked the worst ever Hajj disaster.
