TEHRAN (IQNA) – Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei on Sunday condemned the Saudi regime’s execution of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr.

Speaking at the start of his course to clerics at the post-jurisprudence level in Tehran, Ayatollah Khamenei described shedding the blood of Sheikh Nimr as a political mistake and said God will not let shedding innocent blood go unpunished.

This "unrightfully shed blood will rapidly afflict the politicians and executives” of the regime, the Supreme Leader underlined.

Sheikh Nimr did not encourage people to take armed action, nor had he been involved in covert plots (against the Saudi regime), His Eminence noted.

Ayatollah Khamenei further criticized the so-called advocates of human rights, freedom and democracy for remaining silent over the shedding of this innocent blood, stressing that the Muslim world should feel responsibility over this issue.

The Supreme Leader also referred to the torture of Bahraini people and destroying their mosques and houses by Saudi troops, as well as over 10 months of aggression against the people of Yemen as other examples of the Saudi regime’s crimes and reiterated that those concerned about the fate of humanity, human rights, and justice should not remain indifferent to these issues.

The execution of Sheikh Nimr has drawn widespread international condemnation.

Saudi Arabia executed 47 prisoners on Saturday, including Sheikh Nimr, the Arab country’s interior ministry said in a statement.

Among them were four Shiite Muslims accused of anti-government protests in recent years.
