TEHRAN (IQNA) – Head of the French Society of Shia Muslim Converts Abdullah Jacques Chartier condemned the execution of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr by Saudi Arabia.

Speaking to IQNA, Chartier said this measure by the Saudis indicates the Wahhabis’ desperation and defeat.

He added that eliminating Shia opposition figures is a retaliatory move by the Al Saud regime against Shias.

Sheikh Nimr was among 47 individuals who were put to death on Saturday.

The senior cleric had been arrested in 2012 in the Qatif region of Saudi Arabia’s Shia-majority Eastern Province, which was the scene of peaceful anti-regime demonstrations at the time.

He had been charged with instigating unrest and undermining the kingdom’s security. He had rejected the charges as baseless.

His execution drew widespread condemnation from around the world.

Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei on Sunday said this "unrightfully shed blood will rapidly afflict the politicians and executives”.

Ayatollah Khamenei also criticized the so-called advocates of human rights, freedom and democracy for remaining silent over the shedding of this innocent blood, stressing that the Muslim world should feel responsibility over this issue.
