Seminar Discusses Islam in Georgia

TEHRAN (IQNA) – A seminar titled “Islam in Georgia; Government Policy and Regional Views” was held earlier this week on the country’s capital of Tbilisi.


According to the website of the Caucasus Cultural Center, a number of religious scholars, cultural figures, media people and representatives of European non-governmental organization attended the event.

The House of Caucasus Organization held the seminar.

Addressing the event, Head of Georgia Muslims Department Haj Ramin Igdiyev elaborated on the department’s activities and objectives, saying it seeks to enhance Islam in Georgia and promote religious stability in the country, where there are many different faiths.

He added that the department has made efforts to develop the atmosphere of tolerance in Georgia and boost solidarity and unity among followers of different Islamic schools of thought in the country.

Peaceful nature of Islamic beliefs, Islam’s rejection of terrorism, root causes of emergence of extremist groups, and the history of Islam in the Caucasus were some of the issues discussed at the one-day seminar.

Georgia is a country at the intersection of Europe and Asia. Muslims constitute some 14 percent of the country’s population of approximately 4 million.
