TEHRAN (IQNA) – Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei underlined the need to convey the sublime messages of the Quran to people, which will pave the way for “true progress of humanity”.

Speaking in a meeting with members of Iran’s Quranic community on Tuesday, the Leader added that dignity, power, worldly welfare, spiritual elevation, and happiness depend on acting upon the teachings of the Quran.

Ayatollah Khamenei referred to the identity, intellectual and faith vacuums in today’s world and humanity’s need for Quranic concepts, saying that if these concepts are conveyed to people, the Quran will become the main source of influence in the world.

Elsewhere, the Leader hailed the spread of Quranic activities, especially Quran reading sessions, in the country and stressed the necessity for further promotion of such activities.

Quranic sessions should develop so that the pace of growth of Quranic concepts will speed up, Ayatollah Khamenei added.

Prior to the Leader’s speech, several senior Quran masters recited verses from the Holy Book and there were also performances by a number of choral recitation groups.

The meeting, like previous years, took place on the first day of the holy month of Ramadan.

It is annually held with a large number of Quran reciters and memorizers, managers of Quranic organizations, Tawasheeh (religious songs) groups, and choral recitation groups in attendance.

The fasting month of Ramadan on the Islamic lunar calendar began on Monday in several countries, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen, where the crescent moon has been sighted.

The month began in other Muslim countries such as Iran on Tuesday.

During Ramadan, Muslims fast as an effective way of practicing self-discipline. They are also expected to strengthen their character through self-restraint, charitable-giving and introspection.

Reading and contemplating the Holy Quran is also a major activity for Muslims during the holy month.
