TEHRAN (IQNA) – The 13th edition of Algeria’s international Quran competition kicked off in the north African country on Monday.

Representatives of 56 countries are attending the contest which is underway in the capital Algiers, misr24 website reported.

They compete in memorization, Tajweed recitation and interpretation of the Holy Quran.

Titled "Algeria Quran Award”, it is annually held by the country’s Awqaf and Religious Affairs Ministry.

Quran memorizers under the age of 25 attend the contest every year during the holy month of Ramadan.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is represented in this edition of the contest by Mohammad Rasul Takbiri.

Born in 1995 in Tehran, Takbiri started learning the Quran by heart at the age of 12 and managed to memorize the entire Holy Book in two years.

Winners of the three top ranks in Algeria Quran Award will respectively receive 1 million, 800,000 and 500,000 Algerian Dinars at the closing ceremony on Saturday, July 2.

This year, Algeria’s Awqaf ministry is also organizing a national Quran memorization contest for children.
