TEHRAN (IQNA) – A Malaysian unemployed man who threw a copy of the Quran on the road after a squabble, was jailed for four months by the magistrate's court for insulting Islam.

Fabian Ludrasamy, 43, pleaded guilty to committing the offence at Jalan Chemur near here, at 5.50pm on July 18, which was witnessed by Muhammad Iqbal Rokman.

He was charged with uttering words with the deliberate intention of wounding the religious feelings of any person.

Fabian was also sentenced to two months jail for failing to produce his identity card when asked to do so by the police at Jalan Chemur at 6.05pm on the same day.

Magistrate Mohd Faizal Ismail ordered both sentences to take effect from Fabian's date of arrest, July 18.

According to facts of the case, Fabian threw the Quran on the road after the squabble with a security guard. The incident happened in front of Muhammad Iqbal, 24.

Muhammad Iqbal, a despatch rider, retrieved the Quran from the road, and called out to Fabian as he wanted to know whether the Quran had belonged to him.

Fabian scolded Muhammad Iqbal and ran away but was nabbed by the latter.

Fabian, who was unrepresented, in mitigation said he regretted his actions and said he threw the Quran as he was stressed out and felt pressured.

Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Fariz Muhammad Faizal said the sentence imposed should be a lesson to both the accused and the public and that public interest should be taken into consideration.
