According to the website of the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization (ICRO), he said those who commit acts of violence in the name of religion are after their own interests, stressing that religions greatly contribute to peace.
Cardinal Tauran made the remarks at the opening of the 10th edition of Iran-Vatican interreligious dialogue on Tuesday.
He referred to the issues facing humanity today and reiterated that faiths are not part of the problem but are part of the solution to problems.
Elsewhere, Cardinal Tauran, he noted that Muslims and Christians have lived together peacefully for centuries, adding that the meeting "is proof of continuation of deep friendly ties” between followers of the two faiths.
Also addressing the opening of the event was ICRO Chief Abuzar Ebrahimi Torkaman who referred to the spread of violence in the world in the name of religion and said it is rooted in the wrong ideas of some religious leaders.
He underscored the need for religious leaders and thinkers to stick to rationality and reason at a time when extremist ideas have been formed and led to sectarian clashes and terrorist activities.
The 10th edition of Iran-Vatican interreligious dialogue will conclude in the Vatican City on Wednesday.
"Extremism and Violence in the Name of Religion; Which Approach to Religion” is the theme of this edition.
