TEHRAN (IQNA) – As many as 104 mosques have been destroyed by the Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorist group in the Iraqi city of Mosul and its suburbs, an official said.

Director of Sunni Awqaf Department of Nineveh Governorate Abubakr Kana’an said the terrorist group has completely demolished 37 of the mosques.

He said while some of the other places of worship have been partially destroyed, most of the other cannot be used anymore unless they are fully reconstructed, al-Quds al-Arabi reported.

Kana’an also noted that many of the mosques had historical significance and their destruction is a great loss for the city’s cultural heritage.

The fell into the hands of the Takfiri terrorist group in 2014.

Iraqi government troops and paramilitary forces launched a campaign in October to dislodge Daesh from Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city and Daesh's last major urban bastion in the country.

Since then, they have been making steady gains against the terrorists and liberated the city’s suburbs as well as parts of the city itself.
