Iraqi President, Kuwaiti Emir, Int’l Figures Offer Condolences over Senior Iranian Cleric’s Death

TEHRAN (IQNA) – Following the death of Chairman of Iran’s Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, international figures and officials of different countries have issued statements offering condolences to the Iranian nation.

Iraqi President Fuad Masum, Kuwait’s Emir and Prime Minister, and India’s Prime Minister were among political leaders who sent messages of condolences to Iranian officials over the death of Ayatollah Rafsanjani.


Secretary General of Pakistan’s Minhaj-ul-Quran movement Hassan Qadri, leader of Turkey’s Shias Salahuddin Ozgunduz, former Turkish president Abdullah Gul, and leader of Shia Muslims in Tanzania Sheikh Hamid Jalal also condoled with Iran’s people and officials on the death of the senior cleric.

Ayatollah Rafsanjani died at a hospital in northern Tehran on Sunday at the age of 82 due to a heart condition.

He was among the main aides to the late founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini.

He played an influential role both during the anti-Shah struggles before the victory of the Islamic Revolution and afterwards through various stages of the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Rafsanjani was also a key figure during the eight years of Iraq’s imposed war on Iran (1980-88), serving as substitute to commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
