The participants compete in the categories of Quran memorization, recitation and interpretation in two separate groups for men and women.
A total of 262 men and 28 women are attending the contest.
Addressing a ceremony held to launch the selection competition, Mauritania’s Islamic affairs minister said the contest is aimed, among other things, at promoting sublime Islamic values such as tolerance.
He highlighted Mauritania’s good performance in international Quran competitions and said more efforts should be made to enhancing the level and skills of the country’s representatives.
The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a country in the Maghreb region of western North Africa.
The country’s population is estimated to be about 4 million and virtually all Mauritanians are Muslims.
