CAIR Seeks Probe of Possible Bias Motive for Qur'an Vandalism at New Mexico Library
CAIR also urged authorities to take into account an alleged pattern of behavior by a couple at the Santa Fe Library.
According to library officials, the couple came to the library every few days, moved books around, displayed right-wing books on tables, and at times would be loud and disruptive.
Surveillance cameras reportedly showed the male in the couple would frequently walk to locations in which damaged books were later found.
"Based on the behavior of the suspects, in this case, we urge law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for the destruction of library property,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
Hooper encouraged
people of all faiths and backgrounds to obtain and read a copy of the Quran
through CAIR’s "Explore the Quran” project.
On Wednesday, CAIR’s Arizona chapter called for a similar investigation of the desecration of copies of the Quran by an intruder at a Tucson mosque.
CAIR’s national headquarters in Washington, DC has noted an unprecedented spike in hate incidents targeting Muslims and other minority groups since the election.
