TEHRAN (IQNA) – Winners of the third International Arbaeen Photos and Videos Award were announced and awarded in a ceremony on Sunday.

Head of the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization (ICRO) Abuzar Ebrahimi Torkaman, the organizer of the event, as well as cultural officials and representatives of a number of foreign countries attended the ceremony, held at the Iranian Academy of Arts in Tehran.

According to the panel of judges, a total of 2585 photos from 20 countries were submitted to the secretariat of the Award and after a three-phase assessment process eight were selected as top winners.

The eight prize winners in the photos category were from Iraq, Kuwait, Iran, Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

In the category of video clips, there were 88 video clips submitted to the secretariat and the seven top winners selected by the panel were from Kuwait, Iran, Sweden, Lebanon, Oman and the Republic of Azerbaijan.

At the end of the ceremony, an exhibition of the selected photos was opened at the Academy of Arts.

ICRO annually holds the international competition to highlight different aspects of the Arbaeen pilgrimage which marks the anniversary of the 40th day after the 680AD martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and his household in Karbala.

Every year a large number of pilgrims converge on the holy city of Karbala in Iraq to observe mourning rituals on Arbaeen.

In the past few years, the number was estimated to be more than 20 million.
