CAIR's new report,
titled "The Empowerment of Hate," will also outline how the increase
in anti-Muslim bias incidents has been accompanied by a similar spike in
anti-Muslim hate crimes during the same period. It is noteworthy that the
report focuses primarily on 2016, but also contains data on cases documented by
CAIR during the 2014-2016 period.
"This report
shows not only that anti-Muslim bias incidents have increased sharply, but also
that there is a disturbing trend toward the increasing use of violence against
American Muslims and those perceived to be Muslim," said Corey Saylor,
director of CAIR's Department to Monitor and Combat Islamophobia and co-author
of the report.
He said other
issues covered in the report include public officials conditioning American
audiences to fear Muslims, cases of "flying while Muslim," closures
of bank accounts linked to Muslim names, denials of religious accommodations,
and inappropriate questioning by the FBI, the impact of Islamophobia in
educational institutions, terror watch lists, and workplace discrimination.
