TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Astan (custodianship) of Imam Ali (AS) holy shrine in Najaf, Iraq, is holding a Quran and Nahj-ol-Balaqa competition for women in the city.

The contest has been organized by the Quran department of the Astan’s women affairs section, according to Qaaf news agency.

Anwar al-Hasnawi, the head of the department, said the aim of the contest is promoting the Quranic culture,

She said it has been held in the holy month of Ramadan to encourage women to learn the Quran and Nahj-al-Balaqa.

The department has implemented various Quranic and religious programs during the holy month, which have been warmly received.

During Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic Hijri calendar, Muslims all over the world fast (abstain from foods and drinks) from sunrise to sunset.

They also devote a considerable amount of time during this month to reading and contemplating the Quran.

This year, Ramadan began on Saturday, May 27.
