TEHRAN (IQNA) – More than 1000 copies of the Holy Quran printed in Algeria were distributed among Muslims in Russia.

According to Algeria’s official news agency, they were handed out in mosques and religious centers in Moscow as well as in Siberia and Russia’s Far East regions.

The distribution in Moscow took place in a special ceremony attended by Russian Muslim scholars and Friday prayer leaders.

Algeria’s embassy in Moscow in a statement said the Arab country’s Awqaf and Religious Affairs Ministry has made the move as part of strategic cooperation between the two countries.

The ministry has enhanced cooperation with Russian Islamic centers in recent years, according to the embassy.

Algeria is a Muslim-majority country in North Africa while Russia is a predominantly Orthodox Christian country.

It is estimated that over 20 million of Russia’s population are Muslims.
