TEHRAN (IQNA) – The final stage of the 40th edition of Iran’s national Quran competition kicked off in the northwestern city of Oroumiyeh on Saturday.

Some 900 Quran activists from 31 provinces of the country are attending the contest, underway at the city’s Tharallah religious center.

Head of the Awqaf and Charity Affairs Organization Hojat-ol-Islam Ali Mohammadi in an address to the opening ceremony described the competition as a major factor in promoting the Quran and Quranic Waqf in society.

Also speaking was senior cleric Ayatollah Sayed Ali Akbar Quraishi who underlined the need for paying more attention to acting upon the teachings of the Quran.

He said many of the problems in society can be resolved by adhering to the commandments of the Quran and Islamic teachings.

The final round will continue in different categories until Friday, September 15.

Quran recitation, memorization (at different levels), Adhan (call to prayers), prayer recitation, and Tawasheeh are among the categories of the competition.

A number of senior Quran masters, including Mohammad Reza Sotudenia, Behruz Yarigol, Mehdi Daqaqale, Mohammad Reza Abolqassemi, Gholam Reza Shahmiveh, and Mohammad Reza Pourzargari form the panel of judges.

The annual Quranic event is held by the Awqaf and Charity Affairs Organization with the aim of identifying the country’s Quranic talents and promoting Quranic activities.
