The Tharallah religious center in the northwestern city of Oroumiyeh is hosting the contest.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by a number of Quranic, cultural and political officials.
Addressing the ceremony, Hojat-ol-Islam Hamid Mohammadi, the secretary of Iran’s Council for Development of Quranic Culture, hailed the competition for its role in promoting the Quranic teachings.
He also said that winning a title should not be the contenders’ main objective, stressing that all of those participating in a Quranic competition are winners.
Shahla Tajfar, the director general of women and family affairs at governor general’s office of the West Azarbaijan province, underlined the importance of women’s familiarity with the Quran and its teachings.
The women’s section of the competition is underway in categories like Quran memorization, Quranic and Hadith teachings, and choral recitation of the Quran.
The men’s section concluded in different categories on Friday.
