KUALA LUMPUR (IQNA) – Iran’s representative at Malaysia’s international Quran competition said he was happy with his performance at the event.

Mokktar Dehqan went on the stage at the contest to showcase his Quranic talents on Thursday.

As asked by the panel of judges, he recited verses 59 to 66 of the Holy Quran’s Surah al-Nisa in the ten-minute time given to him.

After his performance, Dehqan told IQNA that he did his best for a good recitation.

“Of course, the recitation a Qari usually performs when exercising is different from those presented at Quran recitation sessions or competitions,” he said.

“But I did my best in this competition to put up a high quality performance as much as possible.”

As for his hopes for winning the contest, Dehqan said it was not easy to predict the final outcome especially because the criteria for choosing the top contenders may not always be followed closely.

He further said he was glad that Seyed Javad Sadat Fatemi, an Iranian Quran expert who is accompanying Dehqan at the competition as a guide, was happy with his performance.

“I hope I will win a title deserving my country,” Dehqan went on to say.

Sadat Fatemi told IQNA earlier that Dehqan’s recitation went as planned except for a few points related to the principles of Tajweed.

“All in all, the performance of our country’s representative was satisfactory,” he said.

Other Qaris performing their recitation on Thursday were from Algeria, South Africa, Morocco, Myanmar, the US, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia.

The 60th international Quran competition of Malaysia, which began in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, will conclude on Saturday.
