Vatican Envoy in Philippines Receives Iran’s Quranic Gift to Pope
The ceremony was held at the residence of Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Tanhayi in Manila.
The 8 works featuring Surah Maryam (Mary) of the Holy Quran, have been calligraphed by Iranian artist Tandis Taqavi and gilded by another Iranian artist Rafaat Mousavi.
They will be delivered to the leader of the worldwide Catholic Church, Pope Francis.
The ceremony was attended by a number of religious, cultural and scholarly figures from Iran, the Vatican, the Philippines and a number of other countries.
Addressing the event, the Iranian ambassador to the Philippines referred to the history of the art of calligraphy in Iran, saying it dates back to 16 centuries ago.
He added that Iranian calligraphers have blended the country’s culture, traditions and history with their works.
Their works also reflect Islamic and religious concepts and values and Iran’s spirituality, he said.
According to Tanhayi, the art of calligraphy in Iran has been greatly inspired by Islam and Quran and can relate to followers of other faiths as well as.
Cacci in his address thanked the Iranian embassy for the event and the gift and described the art works as very attractive.
“I am very happy that this gift has been presented to Pope Francis as a symbol of commonalities between Islam and Christianity and thank the artist who has beautifully calligraphed them,” he added.
