TEHRAN (IQNA) – An election rally was hit by an explosion in Afghanistan's northeastern Takhar province on Saturday.

A police spokesman told Reuters that explosives were placed in a motorcycle near the rally for Nazifa Yousufi Bek, the candidate for the upcoming parliamentary elections.

She had not arrived at the rally when the explosion occurred.

Authorities said there was no claim of responsibility yet.

Takhar province in northeastern Afghanistan, which borders Tajikistan, has seen continued Taliban activity over the last years.

The local media however, reported that at least 12 people were killed and 34 others were injured in the blast.

The explosion comes several days after a similar attack on an election meeting in Helmand province killed at least eight people, including an election candidate.
