TEHRAN (IQNA) – Chairman of Iran’s Assembly of Experts highlighted the grandeur of the annual Arabeen march and said it shows the great unity and solidarity of the Iranian and Iraqi nations.

Speaking at the opening session of the 5th assembly’s 7th session in Tehran on Tuesday, Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati referred to the upcoming Arbaeen march, saying that year after year its magnificence grows.

He added that the annual religious event is a testimony to the greatness of the Islamic Revolution and the unity and solidarity that exists between the two nations of Iran and Iraq.

The senior cleric also underlined the need for focusing on the message of Arbaeen and the uprising of Imam Hussein (AS).

The Assembly has nearly 90 members. It elects and oversees the activities of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, and is in a position of authority to either appoint or dismiss the Leader.

Members are directly elected to office by the people for an eight-year term. The body holds biannual meetings to review major national issues and every other year to appoint a new chairman.

Arbaeen, which is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein (AS).

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias, including Iranians, flock to the Iraqi city of Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

Arbaeen falls on October 19 this year.
