Addressing the Bundestag, Germany’s parliament, on Tuesday, he totally rejected the claims that Islam is a religion of violence, saying that the Holy Prophet of Islam (PBUH) was sent a mercy and blessing for the entire humanity and not just Muslims.
Referring to assertions about the Islamic concept of Jihad, he said Jihad is only permissible for defense and countering aggression not for killing and carnage.
EL-Tayyeb also cited a few verses from the Quran, explaining that the teachings of the Holy Book and the Islamic Sharia promote such principles as justice, equality, and preserving the dignity of human beings.
During his visit to Berlin, the Egyptian religious figure on Monday met with top clerics in Germany's Catholic church.
"I came with a lot of hope in my heart and we hope to be peace makers to save humanity in this world which has lost peace,” he said in a press statement after his visit to the Catholic church.
"Peace and the mercy of religious principles are necessary for the stability of humanity,” he said.
"We are all partners in humanity, and all human beings have the right to enjoy peace, so we must exert our efforts to penetrate the culture of peace among all people,” he added.
