Egyptians Angry over Shutting of Quranic Centers
According to al-Jazeera, many believe the decision will pave the ground for increasing radicalization and extremism among the youth.
People have strongly criticized the move on social media, describing it as a plan to undermine the religious roots of the country.
Egypt’s Awqaf ministry had also earlier revoked permissions granted for establishing a number of religious and Quranic centers.
Those willing to found such centers from now on are required to obtain permission from security bodies in addition to the Awqaf ministry.
The Egyptian government has been cracking down on any opposition as well as religious activities in Egypt since former president Mohamed Mursi was ousted in a military coup led by former military chief and current President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in July 2013.
