TEHRAN (IQNA) – The deviated ideology of Wahhabism is a major factor behind the spread of Islamophobia in the West, a Lebanese scholar said.

Speaking to IQNA, Sheikh Suhaib Habli, a member of Lebanon’s Muslim Scholars Forum, referred to the British colonizers’ role in giving rise to Wahhabism and said some Western countries are now supporting the deviated ideology to spread Islamophobia.

Wahhabis spend a lot of money to foster their deviated ideas in the name of Islam, he said, adding that these attempts are aimed at tarnishing the image of the religion in the world.

Unfortunately, serious measures are not being taken against this strayed ideology, the cleric regretted.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he described unity in the Islamic world as Muslims’ main weapon against enemies and said the aim of promoting unity is not forcing people who follow a certain school of thought to turn to another but the purpose is uniting Muslims against what threatens the Islamic Ummah.

Sheikh Habli, who was in Tehran for the 33rd International Islamic Unity Conference, said that organizing the international event was valuable effort for easing tensions and enhancing unity.

He also stressed the need for efforts to make sure that the decisions taken by the participants in the conference are implemented, urging establishment of committee for that end.

Themed “Ummah unity in defending the al-Aqsa Mosque,” the 33rd International Islamic Unity Conference began in Tehran on Thursday, with 350 personalities from 93 countries in attendance, and concluded on Saturday.

Marking the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), it is held annually in an effort to lay the ground for stronger unity and solidarity among Muslims and provide solutions for their problems.
