TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the US and Europe, despite their rhetoric, are not willing to see peace in Yemen.

Speaking at a meeting with Oman’s Foreign Minister Yusuf bin Alawi in Tehran on Tuesday, Rouhani said the war on Yemen has achieved nothing but destruction, killing of people, creating hostility and endangering Yemen’s territorial integrity.

He added that the US and Europe are not interested in seeing an end to the war because they are benefiting from the arms sales they have managed to have due to the war.

The Iranian president highlighted the need for promotion of fraternity and friendship among regional nations and said all should make efforts to restore peace, security and stability to Yemen through Yemeni-Yemeni dialogue.

Saudi Arabia and a number of its regional allies launched a devastating campaign against Yemen in March 2015, with the goal of bringing the government of former president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi back to power and crushing Ansarullah.

The US-based Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), a nonprofit conflict-research organization, estimates that the war has claimed more than 100,000 lives over the past four and a half years.

The war has also taken a heavy toll on the country’s infrastructure, destroying hospitals, schools, and factories. The UN says over 24 million Yemenis are in dire need of humanitarian aid, including 10 million suffering from extreme levels of hunger.
