TEHRAN (IQNA) – Tens of thousands of Muslims held rallies in a number of cities in Ethiopia to condemn recent attacks on mosques in the Christian-dominated Amhara region.

Last week, four mosques were set on fire by some angry Christians in the region’s Mota town after a church was set ablaze by unidentified people.

The demonstrators denounced the move to burn the mosques and called on the government to take measures to protect Muslim places of worship in Christian-dominated areas.

An official in Amhara region in northern part of Ethiopia said five people suspected of involvement in burning the mosques have been arrested.

On Sunday, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said a Facebook post that “Attempts by extremists to break down our rich history of religious tolerance and coexistence have no place in the new prosperity focused Ethiopia.”

“I condemn such acts of cowardice and call upon all peace-loving Ethiopians to draw upon our deep knowledge of coexistence and our reservoir of respect,” he added.
