TEHRAN (IQNA) – Source close to the Taliban said the group’s leaders have agreed to a temporary ceasefire in order to sign a peace deal with the US.

According to Atlas news agency, the date for signing the peace agreement between the US and the Taliban will be announced within the next few days, after which the two sides will start discussions on the intra-Afghan talks.

“The ceasefire has two components: The first is to announce a ceasefire before signing an agreement with the US. The second part is about a nationwide agreement both with Afghans and the foreigners,” Sayed Akbar Agha, a former Taliban commander, said.

The US-Taliban talks resumed earlier this month after US President Donald Trump made a surprise Thanksgiving Day trip to visit the American soldiers posted in Afghanistan.

Trump had off called the talks in September following a Taliban attack in Kabul that killed a US soldier.

The US president has expressed frustration with the 18-year war in Afghanistan, saying he wants to bring the estimated 12,000 American soldiers home.
