TEHRAN (IQNA) – Media outlets around the world have carried reports about the huge number of people attending the funeral of Iranian commander General Qassem Soleimani.

The funeral began here in the capital Tehran on Monday morning with senior officials and hundreds of thousands of people attending the event.

A huge sea of mourners, streaming from all the adjoining streets, descended on the iconic Engelab (Revolution) Square in central Tehran early Monday morning for a march to Azadi Tower.

They carried portraits of the national hero whose assassination in a US airstrike at Baghdad portrait has generated an outpouring of anger and patriotism across Iran.

The event has received widespread coverage in media outlets around the word.

General Soleimani, deputy commander of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, and a number of their entourage were killed in the strike by American drones near Baghdad International Airport in the early hours of Friday.

The Pentagon said in a statement on Friday that President Donald Trump had ordered the US military to assassinate the top Iranian commander.

Iran has warned that “harsh revenge" is waiting for the US following the strike that killed the leader of the Quds Force.
