TEHRAN (IQNA) – The first case of coronavirus has been confirmed in the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia said.

According to WAS news agency, Muhammad Khalid al-Abd al-Ali, the spokesperson for the kingdom’s health ministry, confirmed the city’s first COVID-19 case.

The health ministry also announced 5 new cases across the country, bringing the total number of coronavirus infections to 20.

Saudi Arabia last week temporarily suspended entry of Umrah pilgrims after a surge in COVID-19 cases in the Middle East.

First detected in Wuhan city in central China in December, the virus has spread to more than 100 countries.

The global death toll is around 3,800 with more than 100,000 confirmed cases, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
