TEHRAN (IQNA) – Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei will deliver a televised speech on Wednesday, marking the 31st anniversary of the demise of Imam Khomeini.

According to a statement released by the committee for organizing events to mark the occasion, there will not be large gatherings this year unlike previous years.

It said various programs had been planned to be held for millions of pilgrims at the mausoleum of Imam Khomeini this year, but they were cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak and the priority of protecting people’s health.

The statement urged everyone to instead watch a speech by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution that will be broadcast live on TV.

Every year, the anniversary of Imam Khomeini’s demise is marked with a ceremony at his mausoleum with Leader of the Islamic Revolution and other Iranian officials in attendance.

Also, large crowds of Iranians travel to Tehran from different parts of the country to take part in the ceremony and pay tribute to Imam Khomeini at his shrine.

But this year these events have been called off due to the restrictions imposed to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

Ayatollah Ruhollah Mousavi Khomeini, better known as Imam Khomeini, engineered Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, which led to the overthrow of the US-backed Shah of Iran.

Imam Khomeini passed away on June 3, 1989, at the age of 87.
