TEHRAN (IQNA) – Jordan will see mosques shuttered for two weeks starting Thursday as part of state efforts to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Mohammad Khalaileh told journalists at the Prime Ministry Monday that the decision comes in response to health recommendations and amid spiraling number of COVID-19 cases.

He highlighted that the government's decision to suspend prayers at mosques is consistent with the Islamic fatwas, menafn.com reported.

He said that the measure is solely aimed at safeguarding the health of the people.

Jordan reopened mosques in June after a four-month closure.
