TEHRAN (IQNA) – An official with the office of Iraq’s top Shia cleric Ayatollah Seyed Ali al-Sistani denied reports that the senior cleric has tested positive for the coronavirus.

The official said the reports are incorrect and the Shia source of emulation has not contracted COVID-19, Mawazin News reported.

Earlier this week, Hojat-ol-Islam Ahmed al-Safi, a representative of Ayatollah Sistani, tested positive for the coronavirus, a source close to the cleric’s office said.

Iraq’s health ministry has reported a rise in COVID-19 infections in the country in recent days.

The number of coronavirus cases in Iraq is above 688,000 and the death toll has surpassed 13,300.
