The PMU, also known as Hashd al-Shaabi, in a statement said the positions of the terrorists in villages west of Lake Hamrin northeast of Baghdad were targeted on Sunday morning.
It said the operation was aimed at cleansing the areas of Daesh militants, Al-Forat News reported.
Also, forces from the PMU, army, police and rapid reaction units began an operation in the northern parts of Diyala this morning to search for Daesh remnants in the areas.
On Saturday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi said the country’s armed forces have managed to kill the second highest ranking member of the terrorist group.
He did not name the terrorist killed by Iraqi forces.
In late 2017, Baghdad declared victory over Daesh in the country.
However, the terrorist group still maintains a presence in rural areas of Anbar, Diyala, Kirkuk, Saladin, and Mosul.
The Iraqi army and PMU forces continue to carry out frequent operations against the group in various parts of the country.
