TEHRAN (IQNA) – Egypt’s Awqaf Minister said 1,400 Quranic schools have been launched in the country in the past year.

Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa said the opening of the schools is part of the Awqaf Ministry’s efforts to promote moderation and counter extremist ideas, Akhbar El-Yom website reported.

He said the ministry is also working on translation and publication of Quranic and Islamic works to counter extremism.

This year, he said, the ministry published an Urdu translation of the Quran for the first time.

It has opened 315 Islamic seminaries and 35 Islamic culture centers and sent copies of journals published by the Islamic Affairs Supreme Council to libraries around the world, Gomaa went on to say.

Egypt is a country in North Africa with a population of around 96 million.

Muslims account for around 90 percent of the country’s total population.

Quranic activities are very common in the Muslim-majority Arab country and many of the Muslim world’s top Qaris in the past and present have been Egyptian.
