TEHRAN (IQNA) – A large number of people attended a funeral held for Egyptian qari and Ibtihal reciter Sheikh Salama Mohamed Mohamed al-Raidi.

The top Quranic figure died at the age of 81 on Thursday, November 11, in his hometown in the North African country’s Beni Suef, Sadimisr.com website reported.

Born in October 1940, Salama was raised by his mother after his father died when he was only three months old.

He started learning the Quran by heart and committed the entire Holy Book to memory at an early age.

Salama then began learning recitation of the Quran and soon gained mastery over recitation in the narration of Hafs from Asim.

He became famous in his hometown and nearby cities for his beautiful Quran recitations.

In 1998 Salama joined Egypt’s Quran Radio as an Ibtihal reciter.

He travelled abroad only once, going to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, for Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage in 2006.
