The Al-Qura Cultural Institute in Najaf organized the event in cooperation with the University of Kufa and the University of Basra.

The Iranian Cultural Center in Iraq also contributed to the holding of the convention, which was aimed at strengthening the bonds between universities and Islamic seminaries.

Providing a venue for exchanging views among scholars and thinkers, discussing preservation and promotion of Islamic civilization’s heritage, giving direction to scholarly studies in religious, ideological, social and economic fields, and enhancing the role of women as a necessary factor in the development of Islamic societies, were among other objectives of the event.

Sheikh Qassem al-Hashemi, the secretary of the convention, said at the gathering that the Ba’athist regime of Saddam Hussein tried to foment discord and division between universities and Islamic seminaries but the two institutions stood against it powerfully.

He also highlighted the role of Islamic seminaries and universities in foiling the attempts by the Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorist group to undermine people’s beliefs and religious identity.

Ayatollah Abolhassan Moqaddas Qarifi was another speaker who called on universities to contribute to the development of the cultural discourse.

He also stressed the need to highlight the moderation of Islam.

More than 70 scholars and thinkers from Iraq and a number of other countries took part in the gathering, on the sidelines of which there was also a book fair and an exhibition of photos featuring the activities of universities and seminaries in Iraq.
