TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Holy Quran warns people not to marry men and women who are not among the faithful. How one marries and who he or she chooses to marry determine whether a family is going to be founded upon goodness or evil.

The Quran says in verse 221 of Surah Al-Baqarah: “Do not marry unbelieving women (idolaters), until they believe: A slave woman who believes is better than an unbelieving woman, even though she allures you. Nor marry (your girls) to unbelievers until they believe: A man slave who believes is better than an unbeliever, even though he allures you. Unbelievers do (but) beckon you to the Fire. But Allah beckons by His Grace to the Garden (of bliss) and forgiveness, and makes His Signs clear to mankind: That they may celebrate His praise.”

There are many profound points to learn from this verse, including those about choosing a spouse and establishing a family. God calls on the faithful to found their home and family on the basis of faith.

The way one chooses a spouse and marries determines whether it will be a family founded on good and faith or founded on evil.

Family is the foundation for development of humans’ character and plays a fundamental role in happiness, growth and awareness of individuals.

In our time we are witnessing many who are attracted to beauty, wealth and social position of individuals when choosing a spouse, failing to realize that a family and home that is going to be built by a man or woman who is not among the faithful would not be a foundation for raising good and pious children. That is why God stresses the significance of faith in man and woman in formation of a pious family and calls on the two to remove all elements of Shirk (polytheism) and do away with elements that weaken faith.

Everyone acts in accordance to their beliefs and if one’s beliefs are corrupt, their behavior would become corrupt. If the behavior of a man and woman becomes corrupt, the foundation of family collapses and all opportunities for raising good and pious children are lost.
