Non-State Schools in Jordan Call for Mandatory Quran Teaching

TEHRAN (IQNA) – A group of non-state schools in Jordan has called for compulsory teaching of the Holy Quran in schools across the Arab country.

In a letter to Jordan’s Ministry of Education, 83 non-state schools have pointed to the necessity of teaching the Holy Quran’s recitation and concepts to children in schools, Al Ghad newspaper reported.

Describing the Quran as one of the valuable tools to support values and ethics, the letter noted that the divine text plays a major role in preserving Arab and Islamic identity and culture.

The letter noted that the measure is necessary to confront the propaganda that targets the Muslim identity on social media.

The non-state schools asked the ministry to introduce lessons on the Quran from the elementary to high school levels.

They also asked the Jordanian universities to not accept new applicants unless they have successfully passed courses on the Quran’s reading and its concepts in high school with the exception of non-Muslim students.
