A large number of pilgrims visiting the mausoleum to attend mourning rituals on the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions attended the Quranic program, according to the Astan’s website.

A number of top qaris of the Astan, including Rasoul al-Ameri and Adil al-Karbalayi recited verses from the Holy Book at the Quranic circle.

Also, Iranian qari Seyed Karim Mousavi recited the Ashura Supplication as well as elegies.

Sheikh Khairuddin Ali al-Hadi, director of the center, said the Quranic event is annually held to commemorate the eve of Ashura when Imam Hussein (AS) and his family members read the Quran.

He said remembering the fact that Imam Hussein (AS) spent the last night before Ashura and his martyrdom to read the Quran is important in explaining about the principles for which the Imam (AS) fought and sacrificed his life.

Ashura is the tenth day of Muharram, the first month in the lunar Hijri calendar.

Shia Muslims, and others in different parts of the world, hold ceremonies every year in Muharram to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions.

The third Shia Imam (AS) and a small group of his followers and family members were martyred by the tyrant of his time - Yazid Bin Muawiya, in the battle of Karbala on Ashura in the year 680 AD.
