Manama Regime Normalized Ties with Israeli Regime to Escape Isolation, Opposition Group Says

TEHRAN (IQNA) – Bahrain’s main opposition group, the al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, highlighted the Manama regime’s inability to create a popular base, saying the rulers of the country have resorted to normalization of ties with the Zionist regime of Israel to cope with their isolation.

Sheikh Hussein Al-Dihi, Al-Wefaq’s deputy secrtary general, said the Al Khalifa regime is in crisis and that is why it has sought ties with Israel, Al-Manar reported.

The regime has been isolated by the people of Bahrain and thus is seeking the Zionists’ support, he said.

Sheikh Al-Dihi noted that all Bahraini people, including Shias, Sunnis and followers of other faiths have opposed the regime’s move to normalize ties with Israel.

The cleric considered the move as a disgrace for the Manama regime and a measure that endangers the security and interests of the Bahraini people.

He also condemned the regime’s oppression and torture of prisoners by the Al Khalifa regime. 

Bahrain has been witnessing a popular uprising since February 2011. Scores of people have been killed and many more arrested since then. On March 14, 2011, troops from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were deployed to Bahrain to assist the Manama government in its crackdown on peaceful protesters.

The protesters in Bahrain were initially seeking political reforms and a constitutional monarchy before their demands transformed into to an outright call for the ouster of the Al Khalifa family following its brutal crackdown on popular protests.

Bahrain has been severely criticized by human rights groups for its harsh crackdown on anti-regime protests.
