Facts About Relationship Between Weak Faith, Suicide
In an article titled “Atheism, Suicide and the Power of Islamic Teachings”, researcher Abduldaem Al-Kaheel points to scientific research which proves the high rate of suicide among atheists compared to followers of religions.
Atheists have long emphasized their ideas and freedoms and have presented these features as their differences from believers, and hence, they consider themselves happier than others.
But recent studies show that atheists are the most depressed. In this research, it has been proven that the highest rate of suicide was among agnostics, that is, those who do not belong to any religion and live without a goal and without faith.
Scientific studies related to suicide have proven that the highest rate of suicide is in the most atheistic countries, and at the top of them is Sweden, which has the highest rate of atheism.
Scientific studies confirm that religious teachings and affiliation play a major role in reducing suicide attempts. In this regard, Islam has put forth the strongest teachings and has given warnings against suicide.
According to valid sources such as the Sahih of Bukhari and the Sahih of Muslim, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has openly warned believers against suicide, saying, “Whosoever kills himself with anything in this world will be tortured with it on the Day of Judgment.” The Holy Prophet (PBUH) further notes that whoever throws himself down from a mountain and kills himself will be throwing himself down in the Fire of Hell forever and ever, whoever drinks poison and kills himself will be sipping it in the Fire of Hell forever and ever, and whoever kills himself with a piece of iron will have that iron in his hand, thrusting it into his belly in the Fire of Hell forever and ever.
This is the strongest warning against suicide. More than 90% of the methods of suicide have been mentioned in this hadith.
If we look at the statistics of the United Nations, we will realize that a significant number of suicides are carried out with a gun or a knife, which is mentioned in the hadith.
The hadith also points to drinking poison and throwing it from a high place as other means of suicide. Therefore, Islam has not ignored this dangerous phenomenon and has addressed it.
According to studies, the rate of suicide has increased greatly in the last fifty years, and it is no secret that this increase may be due to the increase in the rate of atheism in the same period.
Countries that do not impose laws against suicide under the pretext of freedom of speech, such as Sweden and Denmark, have the highest suicide rates.
