-- Bangladesh government will retain the Quranic word "Bismillah-ir Rahman-ir-Rahim” in the preamble of the country's constitution despite its plan to scrap an amendment when the words were incorporated 3 decades ago.
"The word 'Bismillah' will not be dropped. It will stay as it were. No one will tamper with it even if the Fifth Amendment is scrapped" in line with an earlier High Court verdict, Law Minister Shafique Ahmed Ahmed told reporters.

The Fifth Amendment had given constitutional legitimacy to military rulers after the killing of Bangladesh's founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in a military coup in 1975 and the Quranic words "Bismillah-ir Rahman-ir- Rahim" which means "in the name of Allah, the most beneficial, the most merciful", were incorporated in the preamble of the constitution.
