Malaysia’s 52nd Intl Quran Recitation Competition Kicks off in Kuala Lumpur

-- Malaysia’s 52nd International Quran Recitation Competition started Tuesday, July 27, at Putra World Trade Center in Kuala Lumpur.
According to IQNA’s correspondent in Kuala Lumpur, 76 reciters from 47 countries are participating in the 52nd edition of the contest.
Malaysia’s King Mizan Zainal Abidin, Prime Minister Najib Razak, and other high ranking officials were present at the opening ceremony of the event.
Mohammad Mehdi Zahedi Iran’s ambassador to Malaysia, Hojat-ol-Islam Mohammad Hassan Vahedi Iran’s cultural attaché in the country and Hojat-ol-Islam Sharafkhani deputy of Iran’s Awqaf and Charity Affairs Organization also attended the ceremony which began with recitation of some prayer by the imam (prayer leader) of Kuala Lumpur’s Putra Jaya. Next, Malaysian reciter Haj Ahmed Tarmizi recited verses 189-194 of Surah Al Imran.
Addressing the ceremony, Jamil Ahmed Baharum who is in charge of organizing the competition said the theme of this year’s contest is “Strengthening Fraternity and Empowering the Community”.
He added that winners of the first, second and third ranks will receive cash prizes of $10000, $7000, and $4000, respectively. All the other contestants will be given $1000 as consolation prize.
